Time lapse above of Frank creating the Max Payne Mural over the weekend (brought to you by Deep Ellum Media’s Paul Adams).

A little birdie tipped me to this new opening in Deep Ellum - It’s a Grind Coffee - a venture of the Demeter Project. Scheduled to open later in October.
The Demeter Project lists goals to provide revenue streams to North TX Care Based Organizations, living wages and ethical work environments. Ideas brought to you by a former Social Worker of the Year, Human Rights Initiative staff and former Harvard grads of Demeter Project.
The shop is described as a “coffee house featuring a blues and jazz motif, comfortable seating and an eclectic blend of music”. Mighty suitable to Deep Ellum’s history. The house is located on the Dart Line across from Reel FX.
‘Ten Four Good Buddy’ is no longer just a truckers term… it’s also a date to remember. This Saturday, October 4th @ 7:00 pm Kettle Art will host Scotty Mankoff’s first ever one man show. This exhibit will feature over six hundred photos of Dallas shot paparazzi style over this past year. Imagine that coming from such a subdued guy like Scotty. Be there and there’s a good chance you will see you on display!
Salvatore at Daddy Jack’s is having an organic wine tasting on Friday, 5 tapas and 5 wines for $35 per person. A great deal, and it supports a Deep Ellum restaurant! RSVP to Salvatore at 214-653-3949.
Due to the fact that Hurricane Ike scared folks away from attending both the Dallas Art Dealers Association and the Deep Ellum Enrichment Project Art Walks as well as opening night for this show please drop by for our closing party this Saturday, September 27, 2008. ‘Rockula’ will be performing along w/ a very good possibility of ‘Stubberfoam’ as well. Overall this is truly another ‘not to be missed’ Kettle adventure beyond the edge of Dallas’ visual art. thank you!
Press reviews of the play:
“A lively and intelligent new musical! An Inspiration!” - New York Times
“Blues lovers be grateful, be very, very grateful!” - Variety
The Handbook of TX online reports of Jefferson:
“By his teens, he began spending time in Dallas. About 1912 he started performing in the Deep Ellum and Central Track areas of Dallas, where he met Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Leadbelly, one of the most legendary musical figures to travel and live in Texas.”

One of the most beautiful volunteer gigs I’ve ever seen in Deep Ellum happened last Sept 4th at Reel FX for the Call and Response film. (DALLAS will be added soon, contracts in the works.)
View the trailer here: Call+Response - Trailer 1
Reel FX/Radium CA (sister site in Deep Ellum) volunteered editing for the film. Justin Dillon, Director of Call and Response was kind enough to fly in to Dallas to speak to a private screening room of volunteers advocating for victims of modern slavery and human trafficking.
Volunteers from Deep Ellum Enrichment Project, Deep Ellum Association, staff of Preservation Dallas, local Reel FX staff, Life in Deep Ellum staff , Segue and many more were all on hand to see an excellent and inspiring film on the crisis of modern day slavery.
For more information, see the latest on the Call and Response site.
(DALLAS is in the works to be added to the theater list.)
The film stars: Cornel West, Madeline Albright, Julia Ormand, Moby, Talib Kweli, Emmaneul Jal, Daryl Hannah, Cold War Kids, Kevin Bales of Free the Slaves, The International Justice Mission, Imogen Heap, Switchfoot, Omar Hakim, Natasha Bedingfield, Rocco de Luca and the Burden, Five for Fighting and many more.
I witnessed a group of people for a while now, enthusiastically and kindly - sending out emails, posting trailers and downloads, sweating all afternoon to lug heavy chairs and return them with mass speed. There was a lot of kind work done for this great cause. Thanks to the filmmakers and to Deep Ellum for going all out to support a great cause.
