Some of you may have seen me walking around Deep Ellum some time over the last few weeks. A tall skinny guy holding a clipboard and checking addresses, walking up and down the main streets of Deep Ellum. I started this project because I knew that a great portion of Deep Ellum was vacant and wanted to see for myself just how much of it really was, the results really surprised even me. Looking at this map it’s easy to think that there are a lot more occupied buildings than vacant, but think about it, what other neighborhood has this many vacancies? Places that were once mainstays of Deep Ellum are empty, no more Galaxy, no more Trees, no more Gypsy. This is only the first phase of our map project, we are in the process of adding in property owners to show who owns the vacancies, and how much of each owners property is empty.

If you rolled across Good-Latimer down Elm it would really skew the vacancies. I am surprised at the occupancy levels. I guess some of the occupied spaces just don’t show any signs of life like outdoor lighting.
