DEEP Meeting tonight at All Good Cafe, 9:00 pm.
Ya know it’s kind’a weird. CBGB’s (the original home to punk rock in NYC’s Bowery) fell to greedy assholes. Not cool. Years upon years of history are easily destroyed legally, because developers are able to buy it up and choke the scene intentionally. What should have become a historical landmark or shrine was doomed to become another shiny new condo near downtown.
For years people have been saying Deep Ellum is dead. They blame it on all kinds of issues except the guys who sit behind desks, that never come out and could care less about our city or it’s culture.
It’s their job to speculate, vacate buildings and not maintain or repair their properties. These actions drive down the overall area’s value. Once it is less desirable they buy up more for less and get away with tearing it down.
Not sure exactly what the answer is. Preservation Dallas or Historical status?
Now I will be the first to say, I am not a regular at the teen Christian club the Door. But we all know that they are moving into the Gypsy Tea Room space. Why? Two reasons… Gypsy was behind on rent (due to fending off a law suit) so their landlord Westdale doubled it. The other reason is the entire block that currently houses the Door, from Elm to Main, from Trunk to Hall streets will be bulldozed soon. This is no great loss, there is no historical value in these buildings. This will be the beginning of a ‘new Deep Ellum’ to be built by, you guessed it, Westdale.I want you to be aware that many businesses in the area, have our asses out on the front line. If people like you come out, have fun and support our efforts, their success will not come as easily. Party in the face of adversity! It’s either that or cough up a whole lot of money so we can buy it out from under them. Just a thought…
