Located at one of the primary intersections in Deep Ellum, and once one of the first building you would see when exiting the tunnel, the Knights of the Pythias building is a true historic landmark, and not just because of the time that it was built. This building was the first major building in Dallas built designed by a black man, for the black community. It is one of only two buildings in the neighborhood that have the status of a protected landmark (Sons of Hermann Hall is the other). Under Texas law any vacant building designated as a historic landmark must be “mothballed” by the owners. This entails making sure that the building is sealed off from intrusion and natural damage. Check the photos below see for yourself whether or not the building is really being protected.

The Deep Ellum TIFF proposal (made by the Deep Ellum Foundation) shows all new development where the Knights of Pythias now stands, with a boutique hotel planned for development in the area where the Pythias now stands. Any interested party may request the historic preservation officer to investigate whether a property is being demolished by neglect. You can help by contacting Michael P. Pumphrey, manager of long range planning at the city and urging him to check the state of this historic landmark.

Katherine will be enlightening us on what we can do about preserving some of the buildings in Deep Ellum. Union Bankers building is of great concern to us.

We will also go over updates on the Deep Ellum tree lighting ceremony, and of course strategizing on the upcoming City Council hearings.

Minc isn’t normally open on Tuesday, but Julie is showing DEEP some hospitality and opening it for our DEEP meeting. It’s a great place: really cool ambiance and a kick ass patio. Minc just went before the City Plan Commission and they were approved, so we are celebrating that too.

Julie and all the approved businesses still have to go before City Council, so all your favorite Deep Ellum/Expo Park venues still need your suport. We will keep you up to date on that.

At the meeting, we will be wrapping up the final details for the Deep Ellum Sell’um which takes place this Saturday. We still have some spaces available for sellers and we could also use some volunteers for the event.

Street Art Attacks wrapup
- stats: 430 door charges, 250 musicians, ~20 artists, ~60 staff (copasetic/DEEP)
- The Good: many people commented how Deep Ellum felt alive that night and how it reminded them of the “old” Deep Ellum
- The Bad: We could have been better organized. Communication, and especially early planning and follow through, needs to be better
- The Verdict: It was a good time, the event will most likely become a repeating event provided the logistical problems are worked out
