On May 16th, this Friday, during a benefit for the Deep Ellum Association (a nonprofit 501c6), the five chosen muralists will be announced at Club Dada. At Club Dada guests may enjoy one last look at the submissions and enjoy music by Paul Slavens, Mike Graff, and Roy Ivy. Five dollars is the suggested donation for this benefit.  The event will start at 8pm, and finalists will be announced shortly before 9pm.  Club Dada is located at 2720 Elm St.

Sankofa Arts Kafe - Cajun Soul Cuisine and Entertainment - has re-opened (near the old Galaxy Club space). They serve Cajun, Creole, with salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, pastas and seafood entrees. Sankofa’s previous incarnation was on MLK with the likes of Erykah Badu, Outkast, Angie Stone and Common performing.

“500X Gallery is Texas’ oldest, artist run, cooperative gallery.
Established in 1978, 500X provides one of the best exhibition spaces to up and coming artists in the city of Dallas. The gallery is located in a historic circa 1916 tire factory and air-conditioning warehouse and has over 3000 square feet of exhibition space. The plan for 500X Gallery was developed by two artists: Will Hipps, a Massachusetts native who moved to Dallas to teach, and Richard Childers, a local painter. The goal was to provide a space for artists to exhibit free of outside influences and dealer restrictions.” - 500X

The Swiss Avenue Historic District 33rd Annual Mother’s Day Tour of Homes // May 10 - 11, 2008
Home & Gardens tour that will take place Mother’s Day weekend. The event will highlights will include live music and entertainment in Savage Park throughout the weekend, a parade down Swiss Avenue on Saturday at Noon, and a spectacular Mother’s Day Brunch in Savage Park on Sunday 10AM - 1PM. Reservations are not required, but recommended. Catering will be provided by Metro Grill all weekend and Champagne for Brunch on Sunday will begin at 11:30AM. The hours of the tour is Saturday, May 10, 2008 10AM - 6PM // Sunday, May 11, 2008 Noon - 6PM.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Judges will evaluate artist’s submissions and either select an artist based on preliminary submission materials, interview short-listed applicants, or seek more detailed proposals. Selection criteria include: the applicant’s professional qualifications, ability to undertake the project, ability and experience and artistic merit as evidenced by the submitted materials. The artist(s) selected for the commission will be further required to develop the proposal for the approval by the review panel prior to the fabrication and installation phase. The artist selected will sign a waiver with the proposed site property owners. Judging panel members include artists, arts advocates and professionals, and a representative from the Deep Ellum Association.

MURAL REVIEW CRITERIA

• artistic quality - strength of the artist’s concept and demonstrated capability
• context - architectural, geographical, socio-cultural and historical, people places and or events
• scale - appropriateness of scale to the surrounding neighborhood
• diversity - race, age, style, media, experimentation, range of professional experience
• originality - uniqueness
• community support – general support/advocacy from building owner/user, surrounding neighborhood, adjacent businesses, and arts community.

This time we will have two of the coolest music folks we could get: Cindy Chaffin and Jeff Liles.

Cindy Chaffin founded and launched Texas Gigs - before it turned into Pegasus News and she left to create the Finelinelive.com. Fine Line has run some of the most extensive coverage of local music. She works with Hal Samples at Space Studio - and generally is one of the most well connected, looped in, and loved local music contacts. She recently served as a panelist for the Mokah Music Summit - M2S2, and Quick’s Big Thing with Polyphonic Spree.

Jeff Liles has been a long time musician, filmmaker, writer, booker and manager. His background includes music with Decadent Dub Team and Cottonmouth, TX. As well as booking/managing for Trees, Theatre Gallery, The Long Horn Ballroom, Club Dada and the Roxy in LA. He’s now compiling a History of Dallas Music and his films include one on Bill’s Records.
